If you’ve ever felt hesitant about seeking help for your hearing, you’re not alone. Many adults — especially older adults and their families — have had experiences that left them confused, pressured, or unsure whom to trust. Unfortunately, the hearing industry has a wide range of providers with very different levels of training, and the quality of care can vary dramatically.

Recently, a retirement community here in Idaho shared with me that they’d had providers behave unethically in their facility. Because of those experiences, they decided to stop allowing any hearing care providers in the building at all. That decision broke my heart — because it meant residents who genuinely need help suddenly had no access to it.

Mistrust doesn’t appear out of nowhere. It comes from real experiences people have had. The frustration is understandable.

Audiologist vs. Hearing Instrument Specialist: Why Training Matters

One of the biggest sources of confusion is the difference between an audiologist and a hearing instrument specialist. Both exist in the hearing world, but their roles are not the same.

Audiologists:

  • Hold a doctoral-level degree (Au.D.)

  • Are trained in diagnosing hearing loss, tinnitus, balance disorders, auditory processing, and ear-related medical concerns

  • Use evidence-based protocols

  • Provide comprehensive care beyond just amplification

  • Work closely with physicians when needed

Hearing Instrument Specialists:

  • Are trained primarily in hearing aid selection and basic testing

  • Do not diagnose medical conditions

  • Do not receive the same depth of education in anatomy, physiology, pathology, or complex hearing disorders

Both roles have a place, but they are not interchangeable. When you’re making decisions that affect communication, social connection, cognitive health, and safety, the level of training behind your provider matters.

Why Ethical Care Is Critical

Hearing care should never feel rushed. It should never feel like a sales pitch. And it should never leave you confused about your options.
